Well, I haven't departed for Cambridge, yet I'm still finding ways to make an idiot out of myself.
First there was that bizarre episode where I set off my aunt and uncle's alarm as I was trying to leave for my pre-departure classes. I tried to set it and leave but apparently I pressed the wrong button and it went into lockdown mode. Klaxon alarms, shouting "intruder alert!"; I half expected lasers to pop out of the wall and incinerate me.
The rest of that first day went by smoothly, except for the fact that I was late (due to the alarm incident) and had to sit in the front row by myself. I felt like I had a sign on my forehead saying "Sacrifice this one first."
Today I furthered my proof of idiocy. During our history section, the professor asked us what came to mind when we thought about England. I said "King Arthur" (which was also the topic of my research project). Apparently he thought that was the best answer and as he kept talking he asked me where our knowledge of King Arthur came from. I opened my mouth and all that came out was a series mumbles, liked my mouth decided at that moment to act like it was numbed with Novocaine. I was trying to say "Geoffry of Monmouth" and what came out sounded more like "Geofruaofmonmurth." No one laughed which made it even worse.
Later when we were talking about the religious atmosphere of the UK I opened my mouth yet again (what can I say, I never learn) and said that it was mostly atheistic. Now you know how they say there are no stupid questions? They should amend it saying "but there are stupid statements made by people who don't know the facts." The professor gave me the look Alex Trebeck gives contestants on Jeopardy right before saying "I'm sorry, that wasn't in the form of a question." He then proceeded to inform me that England was more of a spiritual, if not overly religious country.
Anyway, as you can tell I'm off to a great start. Granted I am exaggerating (slightly, ever so slightly) but that's just me being hard on myself. Something else you should know about me; I am rather self-critical, but the upside is I take these mishaps and retell them (kinda) humorously for your benefit as well as mine.

Self depreciating humor works for me, as well. After all, I give myself so much material to work with.
